Chapter 6: Sapira Outwitted the Scoundrels

THE MEN SLOWLY closed in on the old woman.

“Please, have mercy on me,” the woman begged. Her hands trembled violently. “What do you want from me?!”

The man with a strip of cloth covering one eye spat on the ground. If he was trying to imitate a terrifying pirate, he had certainly succeeded.

“We only want one thing from you, ale,” he said, spitting again. “Hand over your pouch of money, and nothing bad will happen to you.”

Frightened, the old woman buried her head in her hands.

AT THAT VERY moment, a powerful wind began to blow.

Shhhssssssssssss…

The fierce gust carried clouds of dust with it.

“What’s that?!” the men complained, shielding themselves from the blasting wind and dust.

“Hakkhakk—” The thugs broke into coughing fits.

“Psst…” Sapira seized the distraction and hissed softly to the old woman. “Psst…”

From atop the tree, Sapira waved at her.

Fear flashed across the old woman’s eyes when she saw the figure waving. Carefully, she glanced toward the men to make sure they hadn’t noticed.

Sapira waved again to catch her attention. Their eyes met. She gestured toward a hidden cave nearby where the woman could hide.

The fear in the old woman’s eyes deepened when she understood what Sapira meant.

Seriously? Stop hesitating already, Sapira thought, her heart pounding wildly with fear. At this rate, we’re both going to die if you keep standing there frozen.

She whistled again

“Who’s there?” snarled the group’s leader.

Sapira instantly fell silent. Her eyes widened. They heard me.

“Probably just a bird, pare”

“Gago!” the one-eyed leader barked. “Do animals hiss like that? Someone’s here! Find them!”

Confirmed, they heard me, thought Sapira.

Sapira waved her trembling hands. The wind grew even stronger.

“Pare,” one of the men said, his hair standing on end, “we’re at the enchanted lake. There are aswangs here! Let’s get out of here!”

“Moron!” their leader roared. “Don’t be such a coward!”

Amid the chaos, Sapira never took her eyes off the old woman.

Wait for my signal, Sapira silently gestured.

The old woman nodded. Her eyes were quiet, but determined.

“It’s only the wind! Get yourselves together!” the leader thundered again. “Why are you all standing around?! Get back to your positions!”

The men flinched.

Three… two… Sapira counted silently with her fingers. One! Now! Run!

A violent gust surged forward. It solidified: permutating into a huge funnel of whirlwinds. And the raging cyclone targeted only one thing—the bandit men.

“AHHHHHHH!”

The men screamed together as the playful whirlwind lifted them like balloons and spun them wildly through the air.

If Sapira had the time, she probably would have laughed at the sight of the men being tossed around. Serves them right for being arrogant.

But right now, she had something far more important to do.
