Graduation

Probably one of the most heartwarming moment for me as a teacher is when I see my students graduate from Grade 12. I've always been in charge of the last-minute whipping up in shape of big kiddos. The first part of the year is always a scramble, a frustrating adventure of filling up the gaps. But it was also the most rewarding because I'm meeting teenagers in their most fragile and crucial formative moment. There is a certain toughness that is needed when you're a Grade 12 teacher. Students need to be motivated to work because they are so close to college and to real life. And yet, there must be patience and tenderness, too. As much as Grade 12 are able to think for themselves, they are still teenagers in need of guidance and validation. Burdened by pressures, they're the ones who usually buckle down under pressure. Teachers must be tender, allowing them breathing space when they need it, but also tough, coaxing them to continue anyway.

At the end of the year, after everything has been said and done, the graduation ceremony becomes a testament to such hard work, resilience, and grit.

This year has been totally different, for sure. I never met my Grade 12 students physically. They've never seen me physically either. And yet, I seem to know them anyway: their thoughts, their fears, their frustrations, their aspirations. It may not be a complete understanding of them, but it is a complete understanding of what's essential about them as a student and as a human being.

The warmth that graduation ceremony brings remain the same. As it was in a physical graduation, I sit in front of my computer, silently proud of everything that these young ladies and gentlemen have become. From the bottom of my heart, I sincerely hope that they will soar high and be successful in life, all while being principled and caring.

  1. It was such an overwhelming as well as emotional moment were we could see their ups and downs through the frame of our heart. Each of their names where engraved on it.their journey through our life / our journey through their life , it may be love, anger, disappointment, frustrations, expectations , hope ….everything gone reel by reel … as every teacher feels so proud that they brought some changes in their life that could possibly help them in many ways .
