Good Citizenship during the Covid-19 pandemic

Paano nga ba maging Good Citizens sa gitna ng CoViD-19 pandemic? I’m learning various ways to be one as I read my students’ reflections. And I’m positively touched. Tama sila, maliit man o malaking uri ng pagtulong ay mahalaga.

Dito, sa klaseng ito, patuloy kong nakikilala ang core essence ng mga estudyante. Here, where it’s cool to help and to think of progressive ways to better the society, I’m able to glimpse the unadulterated, almost pure, still naive and clumsy yes, desire of the young ladies and gentlemen to contribute to the society.

The society may paint our beloved conyo kids differently. People may see first their surnames, their parents’ names. Some might even either automatically put them in a pedestal or devalue them altogether by saying they’re just spoiled kids.

Some of them are, believe me. But even the worst ones, I learned, have the genuine capacity to care for someone other than themselves.

So in my years of teaching them, I learned to put aside their surnames and their social status. I don’t care about those things anyway. I learned to suspend my judgement and to get to know them for who they are first. I call them by their names, only their given names. And in my class, I listen to them and allow them to define, redefine, and sometimes even expand, the meaning of good citizenship.

Ah, kaya siguro 4-ish years na tayong magkakasama, at patuloy kong pinipiling magbalik. There’s always an unexplainable, an almost priceless joy, that comes with teaching this course.

  1. It was such an overwhelming as well as emotional moment were we could see their ups and downs through the frame of our heart. Each of their names where engraved on it.their journey through our life / our journey through their life , it may be love, anger, disappointment, frustrations, expectations , hope ….everything gone reel by reel … as every teacher feels so proud that they brought some changes in their life that could possibly help them in many ways .
