Service Learning

They never thought they could be this happy. It was a requirement, a thing they need to do in order to obtain their strict, sometimes unreasonably and panira sa pagiging teenager, teacher’s signature in their freaking yearend clearance.

So the students conceptualized workshops that they will give to the children from the Ugong community.

But today, as they guide the visitor kids from the community learn the skills they are so good at, their faces light up. As their younger students’ started to sketch, to create origamis and to dance, their smiles never wavered. Their heart burst with overflowing pride as their workshop students’ play the piano by themselves, play the ukulele by themselves, shoot the balls despite the kids’ miniature height.

During this time, social status ceases to matter. They forget that what they’re doing is a school requirement. Real empowerment begins to happen. And teenage students, as they teach, truly learn.

And I am so proud, too. And I realize that the next generation is capable of great things and natural humanity. We just have to nurture humanity by providing the right opportunities, albeit one that we might scaffold for them first.

People are not perfect, especially teenage kids who are still trying to make sense of the world. They will never be and shouldn’t be asked to be perfect. But we could help make people humane and decent and kind. And that is good enough.

In the process, we learn the importance of our job and the value of our existence.

  1. It was such an overwhelming as well as emotional moment were we could see their ups and downs through the frame of our heart. Each of their names where engraved on it.their journey through our life / our journey through their life , it may be love, anger, disappointment, frustrations, expectations , hope ….everything gone reel by reel … as every teacher feels so proud that they brought some changes in their life that could possibly help them in many ways .
