Alona’s Quest for the Golden Tree
Chapter 12: The Ibong Adarna’s Song
THERE WAS A song, the most beautiful music I had ever heard.
Let us go to a place where dreams are real,
and it’s happy,
and peaceful,
and blissful.
Let us go to a place where everything is real,
where bunnies could hop,
and trees could dance,
and birds could sing their happy songs.
Let us go to a place
where children are heroes,
and they fight against evil,
and win against them.
Let us go to a place where children can fly,
and they can swim,
and they can dive,
and do whatever they want to do.
Let us go to a place where everything is real,
and people are friends with each other,
where it’s happy
and it’s peaceful,
and it’s blissful.
Let us go to that place and sleep.
Sleep baby sleep.
Let us go to a place where everything is real,
and you can be whoever you want to be,
and it’s happy,
and it’s peaceful,
and it’s blissful.
Sleep baby sleep.
The voice was melodious. Sweet. Captivating.
It seemed to soothe the fear and pain that I felt. It eased the loneliness that overwhelmed.
But why?
Why was I trembling all over? Why was I so frightened and exhausted?
I looked up from behind the sanctuary of tall grasses and overlapping branches, searching for the source of the enchanting melody.
There it was.
Perched majestically atop a branch was a thoroughly large golden bird. It had the luminescent color of white, somehow looking simultaneously ethereal and otherworldly. Its feathers were flecked with a smattering of golden dusts.
There was no doubt about it. This was the Ibong Adarna. It was standing on top of its Golden Tree; its home, its refuge, its gift.
I reached out a hand.
It moved away.
I tried again. The whole thing moved, remaining beyond my reach. It was dangling tantalizingly close. Yet, it remained unreachable.
Then, the whole thing dissolved, as they apparently did in dreams.
I rolled on my bed, snoring.
