Alona’s Quest for the Golden Tree
Epilogue
TAP.
A stone hit the nipa window.
I jerked up, suddenly wide awake. It was three o’clock in the morning.
Tap…tap…
Two more stones followed it.
I got up, ever so slowly.
Nanay, Kuya Maliksi and Kuya Habagat were snoring in their corners.
Careful not to thread on any of them, I walked catlike.
Ate Rachel met me downstairs.
There was a resolute expression in her face.
“Ready?” I asked.
She nodded.
I bit my lips.
The moon was clear. It was ripe for another adventure. As we walked, the cold night air blew severely. Both of us shivered.
It was a very short walk.
“I think here is good.”
I pointed at the place near the edge of the forest, shaded by a particularly huge tree.
Ate Rachelle stopped, poking the ground with her feet. After several minutes, she nodded.
“Here is good,” she replied. “Do you have it?”
I smiled.
“Yes, I do.”
I opened my palm. Sitting in the middle of it was a large, golden-colored seed.
Her face broke into a wide smile.
TODAY, TWENTY years had passed since we planted the Golden Seed.
Did it grow?
Maybe.
If you ask me, given the chance to rewrite childhood history, would I fearlessly, and foolishly, embark on an adventure as I did back then?
I asked myself that dozens of time before. My answer remained the same.
“Yes, I probably will.”
The End
